11/3 Meeting

Tonight at Key Club, ideas were thrown around like things that are thrown around often are thrown around. We made progress in literally every area known to man, and a few only known to canines. The most progressive of which was the Read-a-thon!

To tie into the "Live to Learn" theme and to get our book drive off the ground, a Read-a-thon is in the works. Essentially, students would pay $5 to come and read for a block in the field house, or somewhere. BUT!! if they brought a book (haannnhhh?), the fee would be reduced to $3 (and sorry, Gary Soto, we aren't taking oranges.) This would be a school-wide event as to get the Key Club name out to the growing population of students not listening to the daily bulletins.

Because who doesn't want to escape a few agonizing blocks of their day? So the donated books would bolster the book drive, we'd make some money through admission and a bake sale that would benefit the club and a charity. We're also trying to involve kids in the child development program. Think there are no more wins for us to win. Well, you've never been more wrong in your sad, pitiful life. We get to read...for fun! "Shove a book down their throats," as Kirk so eloquently stated.

Also, we re-collected some of the Trick or Treat for UNICEF boxes, and it was pretty apparent there was tons of change. TONS. so great job everyone! Despite the tree committee's absence, the coffee can committee stepped up to the plate and informed us of their progress to date. (yeah i know that rhymed.) We also formed a new committee for the read-a-thon! We discussed attendance at the Regional Training Conference, and a new service project to make sandwiches for the homeless. All of this in half an hour? You have no idea.

But perhaps the most controversial issue on the table was the tye-dye party. We have resolved that reverse tye-dying at the Kirk residence on Thursday at 3 p.m. is the best way to approach the situation. Please check the facebook group for all of the latest info pertaining to the most exclusive fashion event of the season.

And congrats to the Key Club All Stars of the Week!:
  • We'd like to thank Toria Vincent Campbell for participating in the Mass Audubon Halloween childrens' event!
  • And we'd also like to recognize Mike Casey for being a spectacular banana.
The next post will be of the snazzy group shot of all of us, but you should check out the ones after that for shots of the wikiddope tye-dye party and more!

10/27 Meeting

Well. I'd just like to say how much was accomplished at tonight's meeting. That being: SOMUCHZOMG. We broke into like 19876546 committees, and when there were committeeless people... THEY FORMED A COMMITTEE. There is no possible way of beating that, ever.
We also discussed the Cape Cod Child Development Halloween Party tomorrow (Key Club photographer Conor Manning will be snapping shots of adorable children having their faces painted...by someone...and loving their lives. So make sure you check back for a blog update with pictures, as the Manning children attempt to take over cyberspace...what...), Key Club week events--as co president Katharine Kirk so valiantly stated: "This. This is your time!"--, and we heard from Kiwanis president Mike Dubin about the development of a Main Street Sprint fundraiser! The tree committee looked like they were hard at work, so we mostly left them alone. It was better that way.
In the future: a tye-dye party is in the works. what more needs to be said. tentative locations of "sunday" at "fran's dad's house" were mentioned, but this blog (and facebook) are the premiere authorities of all tye-dye party information. DO NOT GET IT FROM ANY OTHER SOURCE. this party is the most exclusive of the year, and the paparazzi will do anything to make sure scandal is involved. all we want to do is tye dye.
Key Club All Stars!:
  • Mike Casey's mom- Thanks so much for covering all of those coffee cans! Your technique was flawless.
  • Reid McIntyre- collected an amount of money for Trick or Treat for UNICEF co president Nicole "Esmerelda" Horvath refers to as "maaaadddd money
Check back tomorrow for fun.."Halloweeny"..updates about the party!

Recent Meetings!

Oh snap. I'm SO VERY EXCITED!! to report that BHS Key Club has been getting down to business (...to defeat..the Huns...) DanMerritt has collected more dues than I'm sure he'd even like to think about. There are literally no more seats for people (hence, the Science Book Avalanche of '09. Outreach programs will be available to all peoples affected) so many new members are showing up! We're making sub committees! For book drives! If things got more official, I'm pretty sure I'd be removed from my blogging position and replaced with someone of a far more serious nature.
In the realm of outstanding Key Club Members (not that all of you aren't beautiful enough for Christina Aguilera to sing about but...)Jazzy Megnia has made what has been described by Co-President Nicole Horvath as "the bossest book drive poster ever". And Catherine Wade and Mike Casey are coffee can pros. Keep up the great work!
Tonight, we planned for next week's event- a halloween party for the tots at Cape Cod Child Development. The word "haloweeny" was used far too often in discussing arts & crafts, dressing up, and something about a dancefloor...
Also, the debate between Disney and Dr. Suess raged on. Being a Suess proponent, I was a little disheartened to hear of Disney's "attractiveness" to a "wider variety of people." Whtvr.
Finally, things were ended with some icebreaker games. A rable rousing round of Assassin turned ugly when Katrina Malakhoff began slaying people left and right with her handshake of death. Players who approached the game more strategically were able to identify Katrina as the killing machine she really is. Everyone was resurrected for a hallway game of Red light Green light. After being eliminated, DanMerritt and I decided to impose a rival game of RLGL in the opposite direction. This failed. No one ran towards us.

First Fundraiser: Open House Bake Sale

For Key Club's first fundraiser, we decided to exploit hungry confused parents by selling them fattening foods for low low prices! We sold every single baked good, making over $100! Niko will also be running a canned soda business out of her locker, selling them to underclassmen trapped among countless other bodies in the hallway. The next meeting is Tuesday, September 29 at 6:30 p.m.

Photo 1: Niko makes the sale, having caught a hungry parent in her crosshairs.
Photo 2: An artsy shot of Niko and Molly in their element.
Photo 3: How could you not buy a snack from that face?
Photo 4: Niko is vewwy exciiteddd! (Left): Manning children's first attempt at baking

First Meeting!

The Honorable Katharine Kirk presided over Key Club's first meeting of the year on September 23, 2009. The teacher's room, complete with multiple vending machines, a fridge, microwave, and perhaps an oven (?), housed about 11 enthusiastic Key Clubbers (Clubbi?) and Mr. Kuntzman, deeply vested in reading True Compass. We discussed fun(d)raising ideas, witty posters, and volunteer projects; effectively put together the Trick or Treat for UNICEF cardboard boxes; and consumed inhuman amounts of Candy Corn--alerting everyone when a plain yellow one was found. Despite a lackluster attendance due to Drama Club proceedings, Kirk was more enthusiastic than most anyone had ever seen her...ever. Icebreakers were played and pins marveled over. Joy embedded in the hearts of children.
The most pressing issue on hand was the need for baked goods and people selling them at tonight's parent open house. See how that all played out in the next post...!

what you are reading is the first post ever of Barnstable High School's Key Club blog. i'm sure this post will be examined and carbon dated in many centuries from now, and some how displayed in the Smithsonian or its modern equivalent for future generations to behold. for now, it will serve as a public display for minutes, service, and other spectacular surprises. they're so surprising, i dont even know what they are.
let's start with the 2009/10 officers:
Presidents: Katharine Kirk and Nicole Horvath
Vice President: Emily Sperbeck
Secretary: Hailey Cote
Treasurer: Dan Merritt
Editor: Duke Emily Manning XXVIII, Esq.

and that's that.
more fun to come!
